After more than eight years of waiting, Bethesda has finally given The Elder Scrolls VI an official name. The next chapter in the long-running RPG series will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, with the reveal arriving as part of Bethesda Game Studios’ 40th-anniversary celebrations.

The announcement came at the end of a retrospective video narrated by studio head Todd Howard. After reflecting on the games and teams that shaped Bethesda over the past four decades, Howard turned to the question fans have been asking since 2018: what is The Elder Scrolls VI actually called?

A name, and a significant hint about the setting

The separate name-reveal teaser is brief, showing an Elder Scroll emerging from desert sand before revealing the game’s new title. It closes with a passage attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, dated 4E 206.

“The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.”

That reference is the biggest clue in the reveal. Hammerfell is the homeland of the Redguards, and Sentinel is one of its major cities. Bethesda has described the announcement as revealing both the game’s name and location, giving fans their clearest official indication yet of where this new adventure will take place.

Eight years on, but the wait is far from over

The title reveal is a milestone, but it is not the gameplay showcase many fans might have hoped for. There are no new gameplay sequences, no release date or window, and no confirmed platforms. The teaser offers atmosphere, a title and a piece of in-world lore, rather than a proper look at the game.

Bethesda Game Studios has confirmed that development is continuing, while warning that it will be “some time” before it is ready to share more. In other words, the name is official, but players should not mistake this announcement for a sign that launch is just around the corner.

It has been a long road since the original announcement at E3 2018. For now, fans can finally stop calling it The Elder Scrolls VI and start getting used to Sentinel. Whether the next update brings a proper gameplay reveal is another question entirely.

We’ll keep an eye on Bethesda’s next announcement and bring you more as soon as there is something substantial to report.
