Sony’s latest financial results show the PlayStation 5 closing in on a major milestone, with worldwide shipments reaching 97.9 million units. The company also confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine has passed 2.4 million sales, adding another notable figure to an eventful year for PlayStation.

But behind the headline numbers is a more interesting picture. Hardware shipments have slowed compared with last year, while game sales and activity across the PlayStation Network continue to grow.

PS5 approaches 100 million shipments

According to Sony’s second-quarter FY2026 financial results, PlayStation 5 shipments reached 97.9 million worldwide as of 30 September 2026.

Sony shipped 2.6 million consoles during the July to September quarter. That is 900,000 fewer than the 3.5 million shipped in the same period last year, showing that hardware momentum has cooled as the console moves further into its lifecycle.

It is worth making the distinction between shipments and consumer sales. The 97.9 million figure represents consoles shipped into retail channels, rather than a confirmed count of consoles purchased by players.

Even so, the PS5 is now just over two million shipments away from the 100 million milestone.

Marvel’s Wolverine passes 2.4 million sales

Sony also confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine had sold 2.4 million copies worldwide as of 4 November 2026.

Developed by Insomniac Games, the PlayStation 5 exclusive has become one of Sony’s major releases this year. The figure gives us an early indication of how the game is performing commercially, although Sony has not disclosed its development budget or profitability.

For now, 2.4 million sales is a significant milestone, but it is too early to draw conclusions about the game’s overall commercial success.

PlayStation’s wider picture remains positive

Despite the slowdown in console shipments, several other figures from Sony’s report point towards continued growth across its gaming business.

  • 127 million monthly active PlayStation Network users as of 30 September, up eight million year-on-year.
  • 88.2 million PS4 and PS5 full-game software units sold during the quarter, an increase of 7.9 million compared with the same period last year.
  • 8.2 million first-party full-game software units sold, up 1.9 million year-on-year.
  • 78% of full-game software sales were digital downloads, compared with 72% in the same period last year.

The numbers suggest that while fewer new consoles are being shipped, the PlayStation ecosystem continues to generate activity through games and digital services.

What comes next for PlayStation?

With PS5 shipments approaching 100 million and major releases continuing to arrive, Sony is entering an important period for the platform.

The upcoming holiday season will provide another opportunity to drive console shipments, while the performance of games such as Marvel’s Wolverine will help demonstrate the strength of PlayStation’s first-party catalogue.

For now, Sony’s latest results paint a mixed but largely positive picture: hardware shipments are slowing, but the wider PlayStation business remains active and software sales are growing.
